Bought Your Home? Here are Some Helpful Tips.

October 15, 2012

A couple of weeks ago we created PART 1 in a series of “Helpful Tips” that would help you better plan your move into your new home. There is lots that goes on when you move whether you are a first time home buyer or this is your fourth or fifth time moving.

Being prepared for your move will go a long way to ensuring that your transition into your new home is a smooth and enjoyable one. The following is a short list of things that you should consider 60 days before moving:

  1. Visit your new premises in advance and draw up a floor plan so you’ll know where to put things as they’re unloaded off the moving truck.
  2. Make arrangements with a moving company or reserve a rental truck, remember these get booked quickly as everyone usually moves at the same time (end/beginning of the month).
  3. Make travel arrangements, if necessary, with airlines, buses, car rental agencies and hotels.
  4. Transfer memberships in churches, clubs and civic organizations.
  5. If you are moving to a new city, check into the laws and requirements of your new city regarding home-based businesses, professional tests, business licenses and any special laws that might be applicable to you.
  6. Get packing paper, pad for inventory, marking pens, boxes, and twine for packing belongings.
  7. Arrange for a yard sale for unnecessary belongings (or post it all online if you prefer that route).
  8. Notify schools and arrange for enrollment in the new school district.
  9. Order a moving kit from Canada Post.
  10. Notify Canada Revenue Agency www.cra-arc.gc.ca.
  11. Notify doctors, dentists, therapists, veterinarians, etc. Obtain medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories. Ask your doctor and dentist for referrals and transfer prescriptions.

Remember, buying a new home is one of the largest investments you will ever make, proper planning for the move into that new property will make your transition a lot less stressful. Over the next couple of weeks I will post some helpful tips on what to remember to do 30 Days Before You Move.
